CANNING TOWN, LONDON
PHASE 1 COMPLETED 2012
Vermilion is a large-scale regeneration project commissioned by English Cities fund, backed by MUSE, for a site in East London.
Working with Cristina Lanz-Azcarate, Joe Sarkodie and Rafaelle Damiano, the aim of the project was to create an exciting new regeneration development for a very rundown site. Everyone worked hard to design the best homes by overcoming the difficulties, not least the motorway running alongside the site. The design process was protracted, but we were eventually backed by the Mayor of London and approval for the development was given in March 2009.
Phase 1 of the project, completed in 2012, comprised 270 flats and 25,000 sq feet of retail. Composed of separate blocks grouped around a garden and linked by a consistent red ribbon design theme, when those ribbons reach the tower they turn vertical and shoot up 21 storeys into the sky.
The rest of the development, with a value estimated at over £180 million, has been built out by other architects, but I am proud to have given the first phase an exciting start. Phase 1 was nominated for several awards, including a landscape scheme by Churchman.

Testimonial:
“Andrew was a pleasure to work with. He worked extremely well in a team, and brought new ideas and a great sense of fun, too. He was flexible and accommodating, but was always determined to keep high quality inspired design close to the top of the regeneration agenda. His striking design for ‘Vermilion’, Canning Town has now been faithfully built out by his former firm, and makes for a bold addition to the London landscape. It contributes just the right image for such sorely needed East London regeneration. A project I know we are all proud of.” Howard Morris (Former Project Director, English Cities Fund)
